ES Foundry has completed a 2 GW expansion at its Greenwood, South Carolina solar cell factory, bringing the company's total annual solar cell production capacity to 3 GW. The company also reported that the first cell has come off the newly expanded line.
Key facts
- Company: ES Foundry

Why it matters
Solar cell capacity is one of the biggest bottlenecks in the U.S. solar manufacturing chain. Module assembly capacity has expanded quickly, but many module producers still depend on imported cells. ES Foundry's expansion is therefore significant because it adds operating domestic cell capacity, not only announced future capacity.
For module manufacturers, developers, EPCs and asset owners, more U.S.-made cell supply can support domestic-content strategies, procurement traceability and supply-chain risk management. The expansion also gives the U.S. market another operating source of cells at a time when tariff, FEOC and domestic-content rules are reshaping procurement decisions.
