India's solar build-out has shifted into a higher gear. The country has crossed 150 GW of installed solar capacity — adding a record ~50 GW in just 14 months — and industry bodies now expect India to overtake the United States as the world's second-largest solar market in 2026, according to Saur Energy citing NSEFI.
What is driving it
- Utility-scale keeps leading: additions are expected to rise about 6% in 2026 to just over 50 GW, with large tenders and solar-plus-storage hybrids dominating the pipeline.
- Rooftop is scaling fast: the PM Surya Ghar residential scheme has already passed 9.5 GW of installations.
- C&I goes double-digit: commercial and industrial solar is crossing nearly 10 GW a year for the first time as factories lock in cheaper power.
- Agricultural solar (PM-KUSUM) and green-hydrogen demand add further layers.
The flip side
Growth at this pace strains grids, land acquisition and module supply — and it makes vendor due diligence harder, not easier, with thousands of new installers and EPCs entering the market every year.
