Masdar Closes $6.1B Financing for World's First Gigascale 24/7 Solar-Storage Project

Masdar has reached financial close on its 5.2 GW solar / 19 GWh battery project in Abu Dhabi — a $6.1 billion system designed to deliver 1 GW of round-the-clock solar baseload power.

UAE state renewables company Masdar has reached financial close on its 5.2 GW solar / 19 GWh battery storage project in Abu Dhabi — described as the world's first gigascale 24/7 renewable energy project — PV Tech reports.

Key facts

  • Capacity: 5.2 GW of solar PV paired with 19 GWh of battery storage
  • Output design: 1 GW of continuous, round-the-clock baseload solar power
  • Total capital investment: $6.1 billion
  • Debt: $5.1 billion from a consortium of 13 local and international banks; equity: $1 billion from Masdar
  • Co-developer: Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC)
  • Ground broken October 2025; operations expected 2027
  • Positioning: executives referenced powering AI data centres and making the UAE a global hub for AI research

Why it matters

"Solar plus storage" has mostly meant a few hours of evening shifting. This project is a different category: enough battery energy (19 GWh) to turn a giant solar farm into a true baseload power plant. If it performs, it gives every sun-rich grid a template for replacing thermal baseload with firm renewable power — without nuclear or gas.

The financing is the other signal. Thirteen banks putting up $5.1 billion of debt means lenders now treat round-the-clock solar as bankable infrastructure, not a technology experiment. Expect copies of this structure in Saudi Arabia, India, Australia and North Africa.

For the supply chain, one project of this size absorbs module, battery cell, inverter and transformer volumes comparable to a mid-sized country's annual market — and the AI data-centre angle points at who the anchor customers for firm green power will be.
